Feud Game Case
Producing a game case isn't the most important thing i should be doing right now, but It would be nice to print it and have an actual physical copy to show to people.
I think it turned out okay. I may change aspects that do not work well through feedback.

Eleanor
This is rough concept for what Eleanor could look like. She looks a bit like Lena Headey. Maybe that was a subconscious thing. I didn't want her to be scantly clad like a lot of women are in games. She may look beautiful, but she's a warrior. So she will look like one.

Story Overhaul
I was thinking about the story recently and I have had a lot of trouble trying to decide how it will work, since I didn't want the character you play as to be in line for King. If you were male and related there was that possibility you could be King, and with every type of idea I had - it always ended with your character being King.
But then I thought...what if the main character was Female? At first it seemed weird but when I thought about it more I liked the idea. This is the general story:
Leanoric and Learic are twin brothers born into a royal family. Their Father, Leanor, King of the region of Athos - a kind considerate man, ruled the land from the age of 19 until his death 79 years later. Through the use of an equipped amulet discovered century's ago, Leanor could live eternally young, forever - if he so desired. The amulet granted eternal youth, but if the wearer took it off the effects of age would soon catch up. However, it was tradition that the amulet would be given to the next person as King when they reach 100 years of age, and that present King dies honorably and passes on.
Leanoric was born first. A stubborn child, often fighting with his brother, he was fascinated by stories of ancient dark magic and sorcery that has not been prevalent since the dark ages. Learic, a strong warrior - learned his combatant skills from his Father and one of the most feared swordsmen in the land, swiftblade. Learic learned to love life from his mother but to also take it with pride and respect it.
Having been born first, Leanoric was crowned King after Leanor with his brother, Learic by his side he rules the land. With all the good work his father done, it was expected Leanoric would keep Athos prosperous - for a time he did but through the death of his wife a child birth he let the land and it's people fall into dismay, as long as he was King - nothing could touch him and he could do what he liked. He became bitter. Learic has tried to keep Leanoric in line, not losing the faith of the people but his advice falls on deaf ears.
Leanoric was hoping for a male child to become King after, but when his wife died at child birth - she left behind a lovely girl, Eleanor. With the death having a massive effect on Leanoric and not getting the desired gender for a child - he often dismissed her, neglected her and in some instances abused her. Eleanor turned to Learic for guidance and bonded a strong relationship with him. She was very keen about learning the art of being a warrior, a swordsman just like Learic was. He was reluctant at first - but through perseverance Eleanor got what she wanted and got taught valuable skills that she would use later in life. She soon surprised Learic with her excellent footwork and balance and opened her mind to other areas of combat utilising structures and parkour qualities to evade and plan attack.
Leanoric was soon made aware of Eleanor's antics and punished her accordingly. She wasn't supposed to be a warrior. She was supposed to be lady. As time progressed Learic was ageing whilst Leanoric remained youthful. Learic soon reached 84 years of age and was becoming withered and weak. As he lay there on his death bed, He asks Leanoric, "when will you have a son to pass the amulet too?" Leanoric smiles, "don't be silly Learic. You think I would give this up? I have too much fun with this power, and there is more to this than just eternal youth. That's where you should have looked into dark magic and sorcery, but you was too busy playing with sticks and fighting to realise that. I'm going to clean this place up, and now you're gone - I don't have anyone getting in the way now".
Eleanor overhears, hidden above in the shadows. She devises her plan - to steal the amulet and banish it once and for all...
Eleanor steals the amulet and through great skill she manages to escape the castle grounds and gain a horse which allows her to escape. To avoid an uprising, Leanoric alerts just the main people in each major town and city of the vigilante and demands her capture with great reward. Eleanor disguises herself, blending in with society - she can trust no one. Her plan is to destroy the amulet, but each section requires different methods and procedures. With Leanoric getting more desperate as he rapidly ages, he turns to an ancient spell to resurrect a mystical creature named 'Domoku'. With allegiance to Leanoric, Domoku is a master of both the physical and magical. His clan respond only to him. Leanoric demands the girl be brought to him, with the amulet so he can deal with her himself.
It's not long before Domoku captures Eleanor, to her best efforts of escaping. She is brought before the King in an isolated area so no one can see. Leanoric, now frail - is desperate for the amulet. He demands it to be passed over. Domoku goes to hand him the amulet...but he stops. And Domoku's minions kill Leanoric right in front of Eleanor, as the amulet is taken. Domoku plans to bring his race from his realm to take over Athos, it's now a race against time for Eleanor to retrieve the amulet and foil Domoku's plans...
That is the story so far. It will make more sense with game mechanics attached and objectives for the player to understand when Domoku steals the amulet and what you do before hand. At the beginning, where you are young learning warrior skills from Learic, will be the introduction to controls and game mechanics for the player.

Feud Controls Revised
Not only have I made the control sheet look a little more interesting, I have changed the idea of holding RB and then using face buttons for magic - and instead the player will use the directional pad as a hot key system which can include spells. Spells will be quite rare and precious in the game, so having them on the directional pad where you will only use them every now and then makes sense.
As a result I changed RB to parry and B (which was parry before) to 'change weapon'. Your character can only have two weapons to switch over to at any one time.

Market Research
For my re-imagining of 'Feud' I am treading a busy road in the sense that my game, is in a style similar to a lot of current games on the market. Middle ages/fantasy has always been popular and often used. 'Elder Scrolls', 'Fable', 'World of Warcraft' - even the newly released 'Dark Souls' has a similar aesthetic quality linking it to the middle ages and fantasy. Often these games are RPG's (Role Playing Game) and I know the feeling when I first played an RPG. It was very daunting because it's a massive world, and an overwhelming amount of options and stats to take into consideration. They are also very time consuming, and not everyone has the time to invest into a game. Some people want to just pick up from when they left quite easily, but that's not always as easy with RPG's.
![]() |
| Three people? Not a very good turn out |
The first RPG i played was Fable. It took me a while to get into the game but when i did, it was brilliant. A fantastic game. I then went on to play the second...but I soon lost attention and stopped playing it. Similarly, I played Elder Scrolls for a while but when I got turned into a vampire (not knowing how to become human again) I gave up. A lot of people don't of course. But the question is, why did I thoroughly complete Fable, but not the second? For me the first Fable had that perfect blend of an open world RPG but also great level design and upgrading system. I never felt too overwhelmed, the story was interesting and the characters were engaging. With the sequel I felt like it lost those aspects. As a gamer, I like to have a more structured path - which usually means the level design has much more focus. In big RPG's like Fable and Elder Scrolls it seemed like that was lost - and i would get bored quickly.
![]() |
| Not so much linear because there are choices where you can go - just more controlled |
What about the games that are considered the 'middle man' so to speak? The games that are between RPG and linear, focused titles. Games like Zelda: Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime seem to have an almost open world quality but still keep that sense of each area being unique and interesting - as well as having an upgrading system. Zelda has an open world for you to explore, but has a limit on how much you can upgrade and where and what you can explore. For me, Zelda has the perfect balance - making it more accessible. It's this balance I want to have with my game. You don't have to start the game of with 10 classes to choose from, does link have the ability to instead be a massive warrior wielding an axe? Players are often just happy with what they are given and will go with that. Having a strong main hero significantly helps this, which is why my hero would be unique and the player would be able to empathise with his predicament.
![]() |
| Zelda may be open world, but the dungeons break this up and almost feel like levels in themselves |
I will still have RPG elements, but it would be much closer to Zelda than say, Elder Scrolls. Because I want escaping to be quite important in 'Feud' I was considering having a separate control system once you hold down the right trigger on the Xbox 360 controller. I was even considering the left trigger to have a separate control system - in which the camera zooms in slightly and the other buttons are attacking/defending option. This would be rather complicated however - since i'm trying to access and audience that doesn't necessarily focus on RPG games. It will take more thought, but I will elaborate on the controls in the next post.

Just a small update on the alchemy villain - Domuko. I was going to give him eyes but thought it would make the character more mysterious if you couldn't see what was beyond his mask at all. Like the Immortals from the film '300'.
I am going to leave it at this for the minute because right now, I need to concentrate on the mechanics of the game, areas you will visit and story points.

Story Development/Changes
I was thinking about my story and what i could add to it that would make it more interesting. I wanted to have something shocking, out of the blue. What if the king got killed part the way through the story? I talked about the King hiring factions to hunt you. What if he gets desperate the longer time goes by because he will die and turns to a group of beings he doesn't quite understand. A group of characters who are almost just legend, rarely seen - possibly not even human. In desperation he turns to them, and when they catch Learic and bring him to Leanoric - they kill the king (your brother) right in front of you. Forcing you to watch as they claim the amulet (possibly using it for bigger things).
An unexpected turn of events. I think it could shock the player because they expect Leanoric to be the villain, and this Samurai villain is bigger, badder, and stronger. In the scene, Learic would be near to being killed by this new villain but he manages to escape (possibly aided) with the amulet once again. It would be a big chase sequence and from then on the game picks up the pace, becoming more intense as this villain randomly appears in towns - and you certainly aren't strong enough to face him. It would make more sense that this new enemy turns up randomly because he uses dark magic - whereas Leanoric has everyone on alert and can't use magic as a means of travel and to find you.
![]() |
| "He's a goddamned Steef! Hidin his legs, got no orns!" |
The way I envisage this structure, where the game gets intense after Leanoric's death is similar to the game Oddworld: Strangers Wrath. In the game, you get caught and found out that you're a Steef. You escape and the only creatures who don't consider you an outcast are the Natives. Stranger begins to realise that his role as a Steef is more important than he imagined. It's a massive turn in the story and the pace and style of the game changes quite a bit.

Generating Ideas
These are some images I created from the program Alchemy. It is an excellent device to conjure ideas for characters, environments - virtually anything.
The following images are the results of my experimentation. I've coloured sections red to show what I see when i look at the images. This first one however has inspired my villain idea (which has changed from the last post) - a samurai warrior, with mystical properties. Is he human? No one knows. The image shows how I took the original alchemy experiment and what i changed to flesh it out more. I'm looking forward to making a concept of it.

The second image gave me the idea of a boss character in the game. It could be a bird like character, and the blue sections could be an extension of its body with the bigger area being two creatures, in full command of the character.
The third image gave me an idea of the throne, with the red silhouette sitting on what would be the seat. Everything else is very extravagant. Some of the white areas could possibly be stained glass.
These are some initial ideas. i'm still looking to flesh the game out more, so i'm not going to rush into the art too much, because otherwise
Research, Research....and Research!
There are various things I want to look at before continuing my game idea, some of the media below is what I have looked at in preparation of this project, and what I have taken from it as inspiration.
Game of Thrones was a recent television series that I watched. One aspect that instantly came to mind when I was given the title 'Feud' to re-imagine, was the feud in the series with Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister. Both characters have the respect of the king, Ned is a very good hearted man, a best friend of the king. Lannister on the other hand is devious and self centred. The two characters clash in personality, views and opinions. It eventually leads to Ned Stark's injury in a fight with the Lannister and his personal.
It wasn't so much the scene that interested me, rather the hatred I felt towards Jaime (partially helped by the fact he disabled Ned's son). Jaime would get under his skin, questioning his past. The feud was brilliant but the visual style of the Series was equally brilliant. The costumes looked good, the combat was good and the relationships interesting. It was a series filled with people backstabbing and scheming - something I want to incorporate in my own game.
A lot of stories and films feature feuds. Often they are simple with two people simply hating each other, Martina Cole's The Take has a feud which is more complex and very engaging. The series is based around Freddy Jackson having just left prison. With connections on the inside, Freddy has big plans to rise in the criminal world, with his cousin Jimmy by his side. Freddy is violent, unpredictable, and as much as his cousin tries to be by his side and aid - the relationship falls apart ending with Freddy's death. Its not just interesting observing Freddy's behavior however, Jimmy - a somewhat non violent criminal, changes towards the end becoming much more violent and calculated, whist Freddy becomes powerless. It's a clever role reversal. Again, the characters are quite the opposite in terms of the morals they abide by, and as a result the way they conduct business and family relations.

3rd Idea Development
I have decided to look into the third idea for my game. Focusing on Middle Ages era (with a possibility side of Industrial zing). I will give a brief overview of what the game will be about
- Leanoric is King, and Learic is his twin brother - a fine swordsman, noble man and hand of the King. Although they look similar, both men have very different views opinions - but they manage to get along. In the Family, a ancient necklace amulet has been passed down through generations. It prevents the user from aging, keeping you young, fit and healthy. There is a rule however. You may only wear it until you become 100 years old, then you must die honorably, giving it up to the King to be.
Leanoric defies this rule, and as a result - tension is built between the twins until Leanoric orders his brother to be killed. Learic escapes, and in the midst of the chaos steals the amulet. He gives up his armor, possessions - anything that can be traced to him so he can try to blend in with society. Without the amulet, Leanoric will age quickly and die - so he desperately races to find Learic, hiring (3 or 4) factions of people (creatures) to find Learic and retrieve the amulet before it's too late.
Learic's objective - Hide the separate pieces of the amulet to 4 (or 5) locations where they will be safe and unattainable.
As Learic, you will have to be careful of who you converse with, and what you do. People are devious, and will turn you in or alert Leanoric of your where about's if you are not careful. Furthermore, I still want to keep that aspect of Leanoric (and his factions) appearing at random. For example: You might be in a village and think you are safe but suddenly your brother appears with his comrades. At which point you have to be very careful and evade/hide. You could try to attack him, but he is much stronger than you. I like the idea that you are always on the run and constantly aware that they could turn up at any minute. The game is about you preparing yourself to defeat him, whilst hiding the amulet.
This is still a very basic story. It still needs more work and no doubt has plot holes, but it's a start. I might continue to do some initial sketches for character ideas and design before I work on the story more.

Initial Ideas
Although I still have a lot of research to do looking at games, books and films - I have some initial Ideas for my re-imagining of 'Feud'.
1) I want to focus on the idea of avoiding the character, preparing, until you're strong enough to fight him. Genre wise it would be survival horror/stealth. Amnesia influenced me in how the character you play is powerless and is forced to run when the enemy is aware of you. I thought that idea would be quite unique because having watched 'Feud', often your enemy twin will appear and you have to run away because you are not yet powerful enough to defeat him, just like the SA-X in Metroid Fusion. These scenes in which you encounter your foe, unaware of your presence, often made you feel uneasy and tense. I thought this would be interesting to look at. I would still keep Leanoric human, but he would look scary to add to the drama.
To give an example, your are walking around your location and suddenly Leanoric appears. You see him and quickly hide, hoping he doesn't catch a glimpse of you, because if he does you will have to run for your life because you are not yet strong enough to contend with him. It could be possible that there is a separate set of controls when 'running away' as I would like it to be more intense with the ability to jump, climb and dive, as if it is a real chase - desperate to get away. The idea is that you are stealthily exploring your location finding various items which will help prepare you mentally, physically (magically) for when you fight Leanoric. It could be possible you set traps for your enemy, in the event of him seeing(chasing) you. I'd like to keep the spontaneity of Leanoric appearing around you, and make it more likely if you are creating things, or making a lot of noise.
I don't yet have a location, time period, genre or style of game it would be as this is a basic idea.
2) The second idea is more fleshed out and quite different. A team of astronauts are going to investigate a Planet in which they have to travel through a field of meteorites. The ship gets struck and you play the mechanical engineer who tries to fix the ship on the outside. Next thing you know - you wake up in a room on what looks to be a ship. It's not familiar because it's an Alien ship. That's the opening, but the general idea is you end up meeting a race that are feuding with one another, and you are caught in the middle of it all. The reason I thought this would be interesting is because it is about a feud, but not one you are directly involved with. Rather you are trying to help. This strays away from the original idea of the game 'Feud' but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
3) A third idea I had was a game set either in the Middle ages or near future.
Middle ages: You play Learic, a soldier/working class citizen, physically scared from war but noble. Leanoric however is prosperous and high ranking in society. The two are twins (or just brothers), yet completely separate from each other and completely contrast one another. The story of the game revolves around Learic meeting Leanoric after being separate for years, and Leanoric welcoming him. All is not as it seems as Learic and Leanoric have completely different views and opinions which soon leads to them feuding with one another. I have the idea of Learic being unable to physically get to Leanoric since he has much more wealth and power. Meaning Leanoric often gives challenges to his brother knowing that he can't get to him, until the final section of the game where you finally vent frustration in a massive catharsis. This idea was influenced by Jack of Blade's from the game 'Fable' because you often see him and converse with him, but your are unable to get to him. The 'Game of Thrones' series in which Jaime Lannister and Ned Stark feud seemed like a great aspect to adapt for my version of the game.
Near future: The story would be similar, although Leanoric is the leader of a global organisation
This ideas are very basic, but I am looking to flesh out the genre and various aspects in due time.
For research I will be looking at some following media:
- Game of Thrones (series)
- Martina Cole's The Take (series)
- The One (film)
- Face Off (film)
- Demolition man (film)
- Tom and Jerry (cartoon)
- Amnesia (game)
- Devil May Cry 3 (game)
- Batman: Arkham Asylum (game)
- Fable (game)
- Batman and Joker feud (Batman comics and film)

I have many options of what i can take from 'Feud' before I create my re-imagined version, but what I choose to take is up to me. The open world style of the game isn't necessarily what I would want my game to be like. Nor do I particularly like the idea of using Wizards who have spells cast on one another. Possibly something else Is done to the character that initiates the Feud.
One thing that did strike me about the game is how you spend the majority of the story mixing potions in preparation for when you meet Leanoric. Often you see him on a screen and then he vanishes, disappearing before you can get to him. I like this aspect of the game. Constantly trying to track the character whilst preparing for one final battle. The idea of being apart for most of the game sounds quite viable. It reminds me of Jack of Blades from the Xbox game 'Fable' in which you see him at select points, aware of his presence and mystery, yet it's only at the end you face him.
Another game that sprung to mind was Metroid Fusion and Metroid Prime 2. In these games there is a evil version of yourself which is far more powerful. During the story you face-off against the character multiple times at a disadvantage in ability. However, at the end you finally have the tools to equal your enemy and destroy them. I like the idea and am very much considering this element from 'Feud'.

Project Overview
In this project there are 5 games from the 70’s and 80’s, and each person was given a random title of the 5 with the intention to re-imagine the game. It’s very unique because it gives us the chance to be creative and because the games are so old, the possibilities are almost endless in what you can do.
The title still has to be the same, but virtually everything else can be changed.
The title I was given was ‘Feud’
Feud is a 1987 game based around a two sorcerer’s who are twins, and hate each other. When Leanoric casts an aging spell on Learic, Learic has only one day in which to kill his brother, meaning both characters are preparing to kill one another.
A very basic storyline, but I have the freedom to change whatever I wish, so long as there is Feuding involved.

The game was somewhat open world as you could progress through screens to different areas in search for your twin. The gameplay centered around collecting herbs in order to make spells to defeat Leanoric, in which he was also doing the same.
The game also featured an insert card featuring backstory for the game:
“No one knows ‘ow long they have been ‘ere; even old Albert don’t recall ‘em comin’ an’ ‘e reckons ‘e might be over ‘undred! We didn’t mind when they kept themselves to themselves. I mean, all we wants is a bit o’ piece an’ quiet an’ leave to go about our business. We’re simple folk ‘ere in Little Dullford and we can’t be doin’ with magic an’ spells. I never did ‘old with folk meddlin’ in things best left alone. We’d see ‘em o’course; in the forest pickin’ toadstools an’ suchlike, or p’raps one would pop into Tubby Hieke’s shop for ‘erbs an’ stuff, but by an’ large they left us normal folk alone, and that’s ‘ow we like it. They’d ‘ad arguments before, we all know that. Well, readin’ them magic books all day they can’t be right in the ‘ead can they?Anyway, two summers back, or maybe three (I remember because that was the year Albert’s donkey died), old Leanoric (he’s the older one I think), he turned ‘is brother Learic into a frog! His ownbrother! but he turned ‘im back after a week an’ at least they didn’t bother us.
Two weeks back, all this changed; first the forest went quiet fora few days, not even a sparra’ dared to make a sound. Then thenoises began, first shoutin’ then all manner o’ bangs, explosions and things best not thought about. Yesterday, old Leanoric uppedan’ left an’ moved to another ‘ut on t’uther side o’village.Hieke (who knows ‘em better’n most), reckons they’s about to start a feudin’ an’ woe betide the poor soul who gets in their way. That as maybe but there’s strange things afoot in this ‘ere village an’ no mistake. It don’t take no fancy book learnin’ to figger we ain’t seen the last o’this, you mark my words.”
Spells consisted of:
Teleport - this spell will teleport from anywhere you like back
to your cauldron;
Protect - this one will make you invulnerable for a short while;
Sprites - this is a missile spell;
Zombie - this will create a slow moving zombie that’ll follow you
around. If Leanoric is on the screen the zombie will appear on
top of him, draining his energy;
Swift - this allows you to move at twice the speed for a short
time;
Freeze - if Leanoric is on the screen, this will stop him from
moving;
Doppleganger - will produce a replica of you which will divert
Leanoric’s attention while you do other things;
Lightning - a missile spell;
Invisible - makes you invisible;
Reverse - will make Leanoric move in the opposite direction to
the one he wants to;
Heal - self-explanatory;
Fireball - a missile spell.
For a game so old, the story and amount of spells is actually quite impressive. Out of the 5 games, this game had the best animation for the character and best graphics.
